In every culture that has ever existed, human beings have known one truth: death does not sever the bond between the living and those who came before.
"Remember me, though I have to say goodbye.
Remember me, don't let it make you cry."
— COCO, PIXAR 2017
THE UNIVERSAL TRUTH ·
When Pixar released Coco in 2017, something remarkable happened: millions of people who had never heard of Día de los Muertos found themselves weeping — not from sadness, but from recognition. They recognized a truth their own culture had buried, forgotten, or explained away.
The ancestors are present. They watch. They protect. And they need to be remembered.
Mexico
Each November, Mexican families build ofrendas — altars laden with marigolds, photographs, and favorite foods of the departed. The belief: the dead return for one night, guided home by the scent of flowers.
China
Each spring, Chinese families visit ancestral graves, sweep the tomb, burn offerings, and share a meal in the presence of those who came before. The ritual maintains the relationship across death.
